Need Some Questions Answered About Locksmiths?
Is it better to completely change the locks on my doors or just have them re-keyed?
Simular to a lot of other questions - it depends upon most factors - the frequency of key change, the hours it will require to change locks, the number of locks etc.
Most standard door locks you can pick up at the store are not designed to be re-keyed. Paying a locksmith to pull them apart and re-key them (labor plus Call out plus materiels) is more expensive than just picking up a couple duplicate-keyed lock sets at the local home improvement store and installing them yourself.
If you have a large number of locks and will be changing keys often, then consider having a locksmith come and install all new locks - the kind that are made to be re-keyed. A Expert locksmith will take about two hours to completely change over a total homes (house plus outbuildings, garage, etc.). It'll cost a bit more up front (estimates are usually inexpensive and made free if you choose the locksmith) but once they're installed, it'll take maybe 30-40 minutes for the same locksmith to come out, change out the tumblers in the cylinders and cut you a whole new set of keys for the same property. Would recommend this if you have a large number of locks, industrial or commercial property. We have all the locks and padlocks set for one master key, with separate key sets for different parts of the property - kind of like a valet key for your car.

How long should it take the average locksmith to unlock a residential door?
It should take a Professional locksmith at the most 10-15 minutes to open a residential door. Any longer, and you may not be dealing with a licensed Professional locksmith -- and given that locksmith fraud is extremely prevalent-- you should definitely take longer then 10-15 min as a red flag or warning sign. Other signs include not showing up in a marked or branded vehicle, not wearing a uniform, or displaying their licence.
Why should I hire a licensed locksmith?
You should always hire a licensed locksmith because you can easily trust on their services. There are many people who present themselves as capable locksmiths because they can perform simple lock jobs but they don't have any license or training and they also charge extra fees. Licensed locksmiths have proper training and they provide 24/7 hour services without any holiday. One of the best benefits of using a licensed locksmith is that he can unlock any door.
